Boston Trip Part 4

On Tuesday, the 23rd, we weren’t able to meet up with Usman again. So we used our complimentry T1 access in the hotel to look up things to do in the area. One thing that caught my eye was the Larz Anderson Auto Museum. What was kinda cool about this place was that it was inside of a castle. So we decided to take a trip over there. I looked at the directions via subway (the T), and decided, “it’s only 5 miles, we can drive.” Well, that was a bad idea. Yes, it was 5 miles. But by far, Boston is the worst place I’ve ever had to drive before. It took us 45 minutes to get there, with 40 of those minutes being the first 3 miles.

The musuem was very cool - lots of very old cars there - early 1900s cars. I have some photos, but they’re on slide film, and I still haven’t developed them. I have to get it all developed this month.

That night Rory and I ate at the Chart House down by the wharf..Not the biggest seafood fan, but it was pretty good. I had crab stuffed flounder, and it was ok until near the end. I also had some New England clam chowder, which was excellent as expected.

Boston Trip Part 3

Now, it’s Monday morning. We decide to take in some Boston history. So we decide to walk the Freedom Trail. This is a series of sites in Boston which hold historical significance to American freedom. It was pretty cool, got to see some interesting things like Faneuil Hall, the Old North Church, the Massachusetts State House, the Granary Burial Ground - where Paul Revere, John Hancock, and Samuel Adams are buried. It was pretty neat, there is a line of red bricks which guide you where to go.

After that, we walked through this large park, and through a garden which had some cool flowers / plants.

We then met up with Usman again, and went to this burger joint that was one of the craziest places I’ve ever seen…think of the crazy stuff TGI Fridays collects…Now put 3x the amount, in 1/4 of the space. Crazy names for the burgers, I think there was like 45-50 signature burgers.

Yes I'm still Alive

Just plodding along at work. Working on traffic shaping, to try and keep people from using up all the bandwidth. :-(

Other than that, it’s getting cold. Not good news for my car. Lincoln is starting to have issues with the transmission, I need front suspension work, and we need a new door on the house. Lots of fun.

Business - Crazy V6

Also tuned a 2000 Performance Red, Stage 2 Roush Convertable V6 Mustang (phew, how’s that for a mouthful!), and it made 360 RWHP and 404 RWTQ…Blow off valve is insane, scared me when I let off the gas on the dyno! Still working out some drivability quirks (ie, transmission isn’t powerful enough to shift on time lol), but owner is happy over all. :-)

Boston Trip Part 2

On Sunday, the 21st, it was the day of the main event. The MIT Swapfest. The Swapfest is held on the third Sunday of the month during the summer months. It was originally for HAM radio equipment buy/sell but now its a lot of stuff, some garbage, some good. I’ve seen vacuum tubes, antennas, LED flashlights, software, hardware, radios, all sorts of stuff.

We looked around, I tried to sell the T1 channel bank that I brought with me from home, but couldn’t find anyone to buy it. We went through the place about 4 times. Rory didn’t find the SUN that he wanted, but did find a DEC Alpha based computer. On the second time through, I also found a different channel bank - one that actually did what I wanted, for $25. After we got our items, we brought them back to the hotel. We found that Rory needed a SCSI card (hard disk controller), and a network card. So we went back to the swapfest for one last pass to see if we could find either item. When we got there, they were starting to pack up really early, like 1 PM. Unfortunately we didn’t find what we were looking for. On the last pass we didn’t find much else of interest. We then headed back to the hotel, and had lunch there. The food was good, but a little expensive.

After lunch, we headed to the MIT Museum. That place was pretty cool. Had all sorts of old computing machinary, robots, gadgets, 3D stuff, holograms, etc. Had a pretty good time, and it just happened to be free, which is always a plus. I have some pictures I will put up sometime this year (ie, before the end of December. I hope to get Centrallia up too (forgot about that one didn’t you?)).

That night went to the MIT dorm…Had an OK time. Watched the series premiere of Dead Like Me with some people in the dorm. Wasn’t quite the same from the last time we were there. It’s one of those things that you remember something as positive, and then go back and are completely disappointed. The records were no longer stuck in the ceiling tiles, the murals were still on the wall though. The people there seemed much more stuck up then I remember. One cool thing was a guy who melted pennies using electricity (resonance frequencies I think).

Business

Business has been picking up…I had a customer on the 10th, the 24th, and 2 customers lined up for October the 2nd. Things are starting to pick up, and hopefully soon we’ll really start to make some money. I think we’re close to breaking even, and will soon do so.

The 24th was an 05 Mustang GT, Manual Transmission, 4.10 rear axle gears, Steeda Cold Air Intake, CMCV delete plates, underdrive pullies, and a Stainless Works full exhaust system. Car made 316 RWHP, which is 11 more HP then our last 05, but I’m not sure of the torque it made. Very interesting car, very unique sounding with that exhaust.

Boston / Cambridge Trip

Category: Life

Well, I had a fun time on my Massachusetts trip. Myself and Rory went up to Cambridge for MIT’s monthly “Swap Fest” - aka flea market for geeks. Because we thought the weather was going to be hot, I told Rory I would drive up because his Volvo did not have AC. This was somewhat of a good idea, somewhat of a bad idea, and somewhat of a waste - this will be explained later. The swapfest took place on the 21st, but we were in MA from the 20th to the 24th. Here’s what we did:

On the 20th, Rory had just come back from the Adirondack mountains in upstate NY. So basically he came back, got changed, and onto the road again. Packing for the trip wasn’t too bad except it definately ate into the amount of room we had in the car - I had one suitcase, my latop, GPS unit (navigation), a piece of telephone equipment, a battery backup unit for said equipment, and then we also had Rory’s suitcase. Needless to say this took up more room then I had thought it was going to. There was still enough room for some stuff though.

The trip up there actually went pretty well, unlike previously. We made it up there in a little over 3 hours (about 6:20 - 6:30 until about 9:30ish), where in the past it has taken up to 5 - 6 hours to get up there before. The people in New England drive VERY fast on the highway. I averaged 80 MPH just keeping up with traffic there. I was very happy to see that the Cobra managed about 22 MPG as well. We were greeted by the porter who helped us grab everything we needed out of the car, and bring it inside, where we checked in, and expressed our intention to stay until Wednesday (we only had a reservation for that night). Thankfully, they had TWO rooms left. Apparently, at the Hotel@MIT, there are a lot of guests who come into town for conferences and stuff, so they’re busier more duing the week then the weekend. So it was a good thing we said something then. So, they give us our room key, and we go upstairs. The porter follows.

When we get into the room, first thing you could tell was someone in there had been smoking. An unfortunate side effect of a bunch of relatives smoking is you become sensative to the smell. So, I wasn’t happy about that, but could live with it. Then Rory tries to open the safe, and it’s locked. Needless to say, it shouldn’t have been. So the porter comes up, and we express our concerns about the safe, and I said something about the smell. He immediately asks if we’d like a new room, and we said sure.

We go downstairs to our new room, and discover…This room has it’s safe locked as well. So the porter calls someone to come up and fix it. I go with him downstairs to park my car in the lot next door. I park the car, and when I come back, Rory tell me, the TV wasn’t working either…The cable was unplugged. I walk over to the cordless phone, and that’s dead too. We figured it was an MIT intelligence test lol. (Eventually everything in the room worked as described) We get settled, make some calls letting others know we had made it up there, and then we started looking for food. We were about to learn our first lesson about Cambridge. Cambridge shuts down VERY early. Most Starbucks were only open until 7 or 8 PM. Radioshack closed at 7 PM. So finding food was not very easy. We found a pizzeria that had all sorts of stuff…I ordered chicken fingers, Rory had pizza. He had the better end of the deal. But it was good enough. At this point, we called it a night.

More soon.

Work

Work has been kinda crazy since I got back, it’s amazing what a week will do. By the end of the week things were under control, and it’s nice to know when you’re missed :-). That’s about it for now, with the car tuning side business we have a few people who are interested, but the 3rd party we use for a dyno (measures power) is waiting on some parts to be fixed. :-( So we have to wait until that’s working before we can say yes to the three people we have waiting. That will be nice.

Vacation

My aunt Judy was up here from Florida from the 1st to the 10th..So I decided it would be a good idea to take some time off. :-) I enjoyed the time off, though it wasn’t as quiet as I would have liked…Because of the car issues. As a result, I was driving everyone around in my Mustang lol. Not very fun for those in the back. I put on almost 400 miles in a week, which is quite a lot for me. We went to my aunts’ houses in upstate new york, went to a few big malls, etc…It was nice to not have to think about work for a while. Then we drove my aunt to the airport and off she went back to Florida.

Lincoln LS Good and Bad

The last few days have been quite interesting for the LS. Yesterday, in a few hours, myself and my friend Anthony replaced the passenger side valve cover…it really wasn’t that bad overall. Unfortunately the previous person who had the car “attempted” to repair the problem on their own, and didn’t do a very good job. No matter, it should be ok now. Only problem was, my uncle Eric drove the car beforehand, and got a flat tire. No big deal right? Wrong. 3 of 5 lug nuts were stripped. Got a AAA person with a 4-way tire iron to come over, got the lug nuts off. Put the spare on - only 17 PSI of air pressure - it’s suppoed to be 60. Well, I tried getting it to the gas station to pump up the air before bringing it to the dealer for a wheel-shaking issue. Didn’t make it to the gas station. My uncle Paul and his friend Ralph came by and we got the original tire fixed, and back on the car, which was then brought up to the dealer to be checked out. Long story short, the snow tires in the front were wearing very strangely, and was causing the problem. 4 New Toyo Proxies TPTs, and the shake is gone. Gonna monitor the wear pattern of the front tires to make sure things are OK though. Car seems to be driving pretty good now, still have the misfire at idle though. Recently a post on lincolnvscadillac has me thinking it might be a leaking fuel injector, which isn’t fun, but not impossible to fix.

Lincoln LS

Well, I didn’t quite get what I wanted to get done this weekend with the LS…I was supposed to fix a valve cover gasket, but a friend who was supposed to help me couldn’t…So I decided to do an oil change on it at least…Which I did..with some hiccups along the way, but all is good now. Car is running on a fresh filter and 6 qts of Motorcaft 5W30 “semi-synthetic” yeah ok…Once I get the valve cover seals under control, I will definately be switching to a full synthetic, most likely Amsoil…

We shall see. :-)

Memorial Day Weekend

The weekend was interesting…Some good stuff, some annoying stuff…I/my company (Force Performance) tuned our first 2005 Mustang GT on Saturday. Car was nice - black with red interior. Car came in making 278 RWHP and 300 RWTQ, and when we were done, and added a JLT cold air intake, it made 292 RWHP and 319RWTQ. Not bad really for what was done on it. Probably could have gotten another 2 or 3 HP out of it, but it was getting late in the day already. Then I went home and we had a BBQ with the family. That was the good news for the day. The bad news, was that shortly before I left from tuning the Mustang, my grandmother calls me and tells me the LS spilled coolant everywhere again. Not too happy with David Ford at the moment. Called them up, screamed, and told them I wanted it fixed. Unfortuantely for me, it turns out the coolant reservior cracked in half, and caused this issue (the second half of it). Or at least that’s what they say. So we got that fixed, and things are decent…Work is hectic at the moment, but by July things should be better.

Back Online

Back online via cable…Should have all of the stuff back up here (on the hosted site) in 2 days.
